Opening Reception: 7PM-11PM, On display until September 25th
(The Lucent Phoenix is located downstairs at Gallery5)
Gamelan is a form of traditional Indonesian music that is performed in a wide range of settings, from sacred temple ceremonies, to village concerts, dances and wayang (shadow puppet) performances. Using gongs, drums, metallophones, and cymbals, Gamelan creates a dynamically rich sound that is distinct from that of western musics. The University of Richmond has its own community Gamelan ensemble, Gamelan Raga Kusuma, which is directed by Professor Dr. Andrew McGraw.
This summer, Gamelan Raga Kusuma was presented with the opportunity to travel through the islands of Java and Bali, Indonesia and perform alongside New York-based Gamelan Dharma Swara and other local Gamelans. While there, eight members of the group documented their experiences through photography, field recordings, and video.
Their work will be on display at Gallery5 for First Friday, September 3, 2010. The ensemble will also have its instruments there to play and will provide information for how to join.
Exhibition on display until October 15th
Exhibition Statement:
“SELF TITLED” includes original artwork that has been featured on the covers of independently produced LP, CD, and 7” albums. The exhibition assembles a progressive group of artists, many of which are musicians in the bands represented. At first glance, this work may serve only as an informal greeting, or a mere introduction to unindulged content. However, these covers also reflect a powerful social narrative in which recorded sound and visual component become mutual surrogates, transcending advertisement and promotional obligation. As MP3 platforms become ever more prominent, this work reinforces the importance of physical ownership, embodying the autonomous mission of small labels and independent musicians. Whether you are browsing Raymond Pettibond’s work for SST, or looking over the more contemporary visuals of John Baizley (Baroness, Torche), these images elevate our understanding of music and determine how we visualize the masterworks of each generation.
